IBM and Yahoo have developed a free, entry-level, enterprise search application that at least one analyst believes will seriously disrupt the low-end segment of this market where Google has been selling many of its Mini search devices.
IBM and Yahoo plan to release the server-side application on Wednesday as a free download aimed at companies that haven't tried out enterprise search due to cost and complexity concerns.
These mid-tier and high-end products have significantly more features, like the ability to index data from many more sources, like business applications. Brierley, chief technology officer of Decision Critical, had researched tools like the Google Mini because he wanted to do a full-text indexing of the education and training materials the company stores in its databases and serves up to its health care clients.
However, he hadn't found an option that fit his budget, was simple to use and could handle the task until he beta-tested the IBM OmniFind Yahoo Edition earlier this month. Decision Critical has the tool on a staging server while it runs final tests and finishes customization work, but plans to deploy it soon to its clients and their , end users.
It will be installed on an existing server box. While the search interface doesn't offer any advanced settings, they likely won't be missed. For instance, I experienced the expected automatic spell correction and entered queries with wildcard characters. The only feature I missed was that my search term wasn't highlighted in results.
I believe this perception doesn't credit the significant work that obviously went into developing the finished Yahoo Edition, which adapts a lot of features from IBM's other OmniFind engines. And it discounts the important benefit these companies are providing with a solid, simple and supported search solution that runs on enterprises' existing hardware.
Verdict: This entry-level enterprise search product eclipses the usability and delivers the highly relevant results of products costing thousands of dollars. Searching , documents per server in 30 languages , plus providing easy administration, it's sure to find a home in many departmental and even larger enterprise search projects.
