Any instrument that was confirmed to work should just work after you've paired it to the console. Some people like to use a button instead of the tilt because it can be finicky most times and when pressing a button you can be sure of exactly when the star power will activate. I always preferred tilting to activate but when I was playing Rock Band 3 the guitars I used didn't work well with tilt and I actually found pushing the select button would mess up my combos if I did not activate them at the perfect time in between notes.
But I guess everyone is different, and I actually noticed the same thing as well, thankfully the tilting seems to work flawlessly, because if not it's SOL.

They work just like normal notes, were the only difference is that you have to press in more than one fret button when playing them. Example: A green and a red note comes down at the same time. To earn Overdrive, try hitting all the white colored notes that appears from time to time, as these will fill up your Overdrive Meter the yellow bar on your hitline.
To activate Overdrive, turn your guitar up vertically for a second or hit the Select button with your pinky. Be aware that you need a half full or fuller Overdrive meter to be able to activate it. When you feel that you are starting to master the current difficulty you are playing on, try playing some of the easier songs on a higher difficulty for example: going from Easy to Medium difficulty.

I just got my replacement guitar, it works perfect except for the overdrive doesn't activate very often, my warranty is just about up so i think i'll just try and fix it myself, so are there any suggestions on that? True i'll give you taht
